Art is language to me. It is the language of human greatness
I see art in nature, sun sets, and everything
My name is Xu Chen and I’ve been working with leather and creating leather artworks for almost twenty years. The process is arduous yet pleasant and rewarding. Today marks the first time I’ve shown my work to the public and I am honoured to present and share with you something I am very passionate about.
Each shape, cut and contour have been accomplished by hand in all my artworks. I’ve been able to divide my work into three main categories or techniques; abstract collages which utilises the unique textures and colours of leather, three dimensional floral arrangements, and intricate landscapes and sceneries cut or burnt into a single sheet of leather. Unfortunately it is a very time consuming process, hence even over so many years the number of works I’ve completed is relatively little. Over the years I’ve explored many styles and subjects for my artworks. And recently I have been focusing on re-presenting the ancient and traditional style of Chinese art in my own art through the leather cut method. It’s been very exciting to reconnect with my heritage through a medium I am so enthusiastic about. Thus I believe I’ve captured the ideal balance in my pieces, between art and culture; classic and modern, exquisiteness and timelessness. I believe this is a medium of art that has been rarely explored and completely original. Where the simple tones of leather unites the culture and traditions of my subjects perfectly, creating something that is untouched by time and change. |
